5 Future Classics for £500 (ish)

One minute you can’t give them away, the next they’ve all but vanished and remaining examples are hawked for silly money. Get ahead of the game and buy some reasonably priced endangered retro motors whilst they’re still cheap. Here are my tips…

1. MK1 Citroen AX.

£500 may not buy you a decent GT, but it can secure you a rather chic looking standard version. The MK1 AX still seems to tread the line between retro and modern as, for a car launched in 1986, the exterior has aged rather well. Light, nippy, frugal and fun to drive, I think these are a superb investment, just don’t have a crash in one.

This stunner has been available for 2 weeks. 1 years MOT, 4 months tax and still no takers…

2. Alfa Romeo GTV

Arguably the most stylish and boastfully impressive motor you can buy for under £500. If you’re dating a fancy lady you can pull up in this, tell her it’s an Alfa Romeo and she’ll think you’re one sharp gentleman. She need not know that it cost less than her handbag, but she may smell a rat when it almost certainly breaks down before you get to Zizzi’s.

So, an investment? Maybe not, but at this price impossible to ignore.

3.  VOLVO 240

Ok, it’s already considered a classic, but these tanks can still be picked up for next to nothing. This one is slightly out of budget but looks an absolute honey. It’s is open to offers too….

4.  Fiat Cinquecento Sporting

Where did these suddenly disappear too? A plucky little city car with hot hatch looks but insurance friendly 1.1 engine. Prices are currently low, but like all small Fiats they’ll suddenly find a following and values will be well into four figures before you know it. This one made just £550….

5. MK1 Ford Mondeo

“Front wheel drive Fords will never be worth the same money as rear wheel drive ones”. People would say this of the MK3 Escort only a few years ago. With MK4 RS Turbos now being offered for up to £7000 it just goes to show, if it’s old and it’s a Ford there’s tax to pay. So how long before MK1 Mondeo values finds themselves on the up? Probably not that long. Banger racing, the scrappage scheme and escalating prices of gaffer tape have meant that most have now met their maker.  Good ones can still be found though, like this tempting 1.6 LX. It looks as fresh as it left the factory with original wheel trims and crappy standard stereo. A welcome addition to any classic car show… from 2016 maybe.

I’m enjoying the thought of taking a lady out on a first date in my £499 GTV after weeks of wooing…..

“Alex, my feet are wet. What’s that smell? Is it us? Are we on fire?”
